What is the difference between Synthetic and Organic fertilizer options/ recommendations?
Synthetic
Synthetic fertilizers are man-made and do not contain the element of Carbon (C)
- An advantage of using synthetic fertilizers over organic is that synthetic fertilizer provides quick results that are more predictable in nature.
- They can provide higher dosages of nutrients per pound, decreasing application rates and cost per application.
- In some instances, synthetic fertilizers are coated with organic or synthetic components to facilitate precise slow-release characteristics.
- Synthetics often have a higher salt index, potentially causing soil to become "salty" over time.
Organic
Organic fertilizers will contain carbon and are commonly derived from a variety of sources including animal waste and plant-based sources, such as soybean meal.
- Provide natural slow-release characteristics heavily dependent on soil temperature, microbes, and soil moisture.
- Typically have a lower salt index
- Typically, lower chance of burning if miss applied.
- Benefits include soil building and soil health components.
Hybrid
Hybrid fertilizers are a blend of both synthetic and organic sources. Most MySoil "Synthetic" recommended products would be categorized as hybrids.
- Combines the advantages of both synthetics and organics into one product.
- Provides some quick green up and growth with a natural carbon-based slow release that feeds plants over time.
- Benefits include soil building and soil health components along with controlled growth and optimal color.
